Hundreds of National Guard members in support of civil authorities in the Virgin Islands reside on a soccer field converted into a tent city or Disaster Relief Beddown Set, adjacent to the Cyril E. King International Airport on the island of Saint Thomas. The DRBS was built in a matter of days by members of the 200th Red Horse Squadron, Ohio National Guard, who arrived to the Virgin Islands prior to Hurricane Irma. In fact, the team battled terrain and Mother Nature on multiple occasions post-arrival.

”Weather has been an issue to say the least. We were here right after (Hurricane) Irma,” said Master Sgt. Josh Barker. “We built up base camp, and then (Hurricane) Maria came through, so we had to evacuate – tear the entire tent city down – and evacuate to Florida, and then once Maria came through build everything back up.”

Once back, civil engineers also installed a reverse, osmosis water purification unit, which produces clean potable water and feeds water buffalos, showers and laundry facilities utilized by Guard members who live within the camp. Additionally, they also dug an extensive drainage system to reduce flooding; even the occasional storm can leave approximately three feet of standing water.
